Cambridge rules 1848 parker’s piece

‘Written In Stone’

In 1848 a group of students from Cambridge University wrote a set of 11 rules which everyone could finally agree upon. Nailed to a tree surrounding Parker’s Piece, this was the first time that football as we know it had any formalised laws. It was the catalyst where, from this very specific patch of English landscape in the heart of Cambridge, the game spread to encompass every corner of the world

Working with designers Allan Ward and Neville Gabie we sandblasted the the original Cambridge rules in language’s from across the globe into the granite units.

Four tall columns now sit in Parker’s Piece park where the first match was played using these rules and the remaining columns have gone to clubs around the world including the Maracanã Stadium in Brazil.
