In August 2013 a campaign to honour the Victoria Cross recipients from the first world war was announced.

As part of this a commemorative paving stone will be laid at the birth place of Victoria Cross recipients to:

  • Honour their bravery
  • Provide a lasting legacy of local heroes within communities
  • Enable residents to gain a greater understanding of how their area fitted into the First World War Story

Working with Marshalls commercial and Charlie MacKeith winning design we have started to etch the name of each VC recipient into Scoutmoor stone pavers.

A total of 628 Victoria Crosses were awarded during the First World War.

  • 482 were awarded to UK and Ireland born recipients
  • 145 were awarded to serviceman who fought for Britain, but were born overseas
  • 1 person was awarded the Victoria cross twice during the first world war.
